I m really excited about building a real cabinetmakers workbench with Lie Neilsen vise hardware and solid maple construction. The bench I will be building is similar to the Lie Nielsen bench. Built of solid maple it will weigh about 300 pounds and have an end vise and a front vise.. It comes in handy for several jobs on the bench including planning or anytime you need a stop to hold a board in place without clamping it. The Dog-Hole back is a piece of maple 2 1/2 thick same as the top slab and 2 3/4 wide. It mates up to the slab but does not go all of the way to the end of the end vise.
I drilled 1/4 dowel holes in the legs and then fully inserted then tenons and marked where the holes intersected the tenons. Then I removed the tenons and measured inwards towards the shoulder by 1/16 and drilled 1/4 holes in the tenons. I applied glue to the mortise and tenons and reassembled the joints.. This is a luthier bench I made. I got the plan online somewhere. The frame wood is lyptus hard as nails and really heavy. The maple cut and glued from 1 thick boards. It s really functional and a great tool to have in the violin shop.
