Thanks guys. Now that I think about it working with thick stock would be difficult with holdfasts. While the viseless bench may be a short term solution anything I design will have the capacity for a leg vise and tail vise to be added. I have a rather large Nicholson style workbench that I ve been using for about a year. It s great for dimensioning lumber and heavy joinery work like chopping mortises. However it s too low for a lot of finer joinery tasks. I decided to make another much taller bench for joinery specific operations.
On building the bench, which was 1250mm in length, 385mm in width and 505mm in height spare materials available to me at the time , determined the size , I set the goal to build a piece of furniture TV unit , solely using the bench. The TV unit features dovetails, housing joint and conical mortise and tenon joints.. In the front of the shop I almost walked by what appears to be some type of Nicholson workbench. I suspect it was built by a country craftsman. Check out the wide sides and the holes plastered front end to end. I don t see any pattern to the holes, so my guess is that they were drilled in as needed. Overall, the piece looks rickety at best.
