Part of our recent haul of ash for the workbench projec. This is probably some of the nicest wood I ve ever owned, hands down. We really got lucky here with this rough sawn ash lumber for the workbench we re on our way to building. It s stunning stuff, immaculately sawn and largely free of flaws.. I built a workbench out of ash last summer and am very happy with it. I used shellac to finish it. This kept the wood light coloured and easily repairable. No problems with tooling it either splintering, etc. . I left the bottom open to allow room for a tool chest at a later date. The dimensions of the top are 28 x 72 . View Image View Image. View Image

This is my second bench. The first was for my wife s lathe. This is made out of rough ash, planed to1 thick boards. I really enjoy ash as the grain looks great. It is a strong wood but not to hard for woodworking. I finished it in BLO, which I really like. The plans for this bench were modified from Stumpy s Rubio bench plans.. Ash is much like white oak, with a consistent grain and has great strength, especially spring strength. So it s used for garden implements, baseball bats, etc. As far as splinters, doug fir is the real one to watch out for. With ash, just plane it or sand it up to 220 or so, should have no problems.

In fact, ash and oak resemble each other in that there are bands of porous spring wood in both, though the medullary rays of ash are thinner and are often hardly discernible.. Ash has straight, coarse, open-pored grain of even texture. It also exhibits a pronounced difference between latewood and earlywood so matching boards requires care. Flatsawn stock may occasionally display bird s-eye and curly figure. Some ash can have darker bug tracks that are not considered defects except in veneer logs.
